Shop Preparation Cont… <back>
This picture shows me putting down the first layer of Enamel epoxy. The color I chose was an off white color. I haven’t decided exactly how I am going to layout the floor. I’ve see so many different ways of doing this through some books of mine and internet research. I think I may paint work zones on the floor. Haven’t made my mind up at this point, so I will use this white as a base color and a marine blue for the accents or work zones.
This image shows the respirator I was wearing. The epoxy based coating was extremely toxic, so I wore this approved respirator and mask, plus I had all the windows and through doors open… But as evening approached, I had to close the doors to keep the bugs out.
The floor coat is covering well, or at least this late at night it looks as if it is. I will check first thing in the morning after it dries for a period to see.
This picture shows the floor with the first coat. I’ve let it stand all day and now I can see roller marks in the finish. I will have to put another coat. The directions say I should apply the second coat after 12 hrs and before 24.
This image shows the floor after the second coat. No roller marks. I’ve decided in the last couple days to do a checker board design. I know it means a lot of work and taping. Seems the floor is clear of equipment and tools, nows the time if I am going to do something neat, so bear down and do it.
Since my area of shop is 24x30 I decided to go with 3’ squares instead of several large rectangular blocks. I chose a Marine Blue, it is a strong blue with a lot of gray. To make these fall evenly I found the center point of the room and will have 4 of the squares start from there. Today is Father’s Day and LeAnna (my wife) gave me a laser level, it seems to be perfect for this. I think she is the best! I measured the center point on the walls too. From there I marked 3’ marks on the walls from the center point to the corners. This gave me marks to line the laser to from the center point of the floor. It make easier work taping the floor.
I got about half of the floor laid out and my daughter and her family came over for a cookout for Father’s Day. Michael is a champ and I appreciate his help very much.
This image depicts what the floor looked like after the tape corners were cleaned up and ready to paint.
After everyone ate and tired from swimming, I jumped down to the shop and started painting. Its late at night and hope I don’t get to many bugs in my paint.
Sure is starting to take shape!
This is the next morning after the second coat. It sure is striking…
This is the floor the same day, but later in the evening. I removed the tape before the paint dried real well. It’s coming up a thunderstorm, so let me hurry and close the windows some…
This is the completion of the floor project. I will let the floor dry over my next work period which is 5 days and will start on the walls. More to come….
